The Leg Up Program

I’m finding it difficult this week. I don’t know if that’s because I’m in a new routine – waking later, so should be seemingly more rested, but somehow I don’t feel it. I started a new job this week, so am mentally tired by the end of the day as there’s a lot of work to do. Maybe that’s having a bigger drain on my body than I realise.

Anyway, starting later means finishing later, so I was only out of the house at 17:45 – normally I’d be returning earlier than that, after an hours ride.

I decided I’d head down to Avenum Park area, and then cross the river and explore over that way. That was nice – particularly with the summer sun in full late afternoon swing. I found a few paths I’d not been down before, but they were definitely more “trail” than smooth road type surface.

You can see the area from the photo on the right there. Little tracks around and behind those trees. Never been down there before. Heck, until I got my bike I didn’t even know those paths existed.

Anyway, aside from that this was another largely easy ride. Nothing intentionally strenuous, as I’m still feeling a bit tender in the right knee from Sunday.

I think doing a 100km ride off the back of a Covid illness was probably not the smartest idea. And with the new job, and generally still not feeling full of energy, or at least as energetic as I was pre-illness, I’m happy just to be getting a few kilometres and half an hour out of the bike in the sun.

Take what you can get.

  1. Sounds like you need a recovery week.
Some of the newer Garmin watches have body battery and apparently give a pretty good indication of how you’re doing. Whoop is supposed to be the gold standard, but $30USD/month, man I got kids to feed lol

    • Wow, I had no idea whoop was a monthly subscription. Then again, what isn’t these days?

I’m finding the concept of a recovery week really difficult. I’ve let my Zwift sub expire, and because it’s been nice – prior to illness – I hadn’t bothered subbing to The Sufferfest either. Doing everything outdoors, I believe, is putting too much stress on my body – compared to what I’ve been used too. I think I need to get back on the turbo for easier sessions at least once a week.
