Getting Your Priorities Right

A pretty easy session today. Apparently I was going to do a climb but I forgot. And that is a genuine forgetfulness, rather than a lack of desire to do a harder ride.

The thing is, I had a task to do at work that was consuming a lot of my thoughts. It’s one of them thankless tasks that needs to be done, no one wants to do it, and when it is done, if it all goes to plan, no one knows it even happened.

Anyway, I had that to do.

But before I was going to do that I first wanted to get my priorities in order:

  • ride
  • eat

Because if that went pear shaped, it would be an “all hands to the pump” scenario, and food and bike riding would go out of the window.

Somehow, in a bit of a daze, I did end up on the bike. Cold. But ready.

I picked a Video on Demand workout, the Aerobic Ramps session. Like last time, this one was with Si Bradley, though I made sure to do things more properly for this ride.

The first thing I did was to be on the bike, and clipped in before starting the workout. I also made sure that my sound was on. And this was obviously quite important.

Usually when I started a ride, I begin pedalling immediately, even whilst the loading screen is active.

Today, I was pedalling when the workout loaded, but Si said I should stop, and wait for him to count down so that the workout video was synced with the activity.

This definitely helped, as last ride this was not the case. But last ride I bodged up and forgot to turn the sound on, so I wasn’t aware I needed to do that. What I would say is that this should almost certainly be handled by MyWhoosh, rather than rely on the rider.

The interesting part about this video was that it was a previous live session. So as we were pedalling around, Si was refering to other riders who were in his group at the time of recording. I quite liked that, and also wish I had been on there with them. That’s definitely novel. I’ve done plenty of live group rides, but never with an on-screen instructor.

As usual, my messed up FTP seemed to play into this one. I wasn’t at all taxed, so I think the bandings for me are wrong. At one point Si mentioned he was approaching 500 calories burned. I was sat at 320 at that point. Quite the difference in intensity.

Anyway, an easier workout to end the midweek rides. I’ve now got my thicker socks on rather than my sports socks, so at least my toes can begin to warm up. Oh, and I’ve shut the window again.
