Hot Lap

Having spent the week away, it was nice to get back home and out on my proper road bike. There’s something a road bike gives that a mountain bike never could – and that would be speed.

However, whilst it was hot where I was, it has been even hotter back home in Preston. And last night wasn’t much different. Fortunately, I’d left it until late in the evening to do this ride, and was only going out to Catforth and back, which isn’t too far. By the time I got out, the worst of the relentless sun was abating, and with a breeze it wasn’t unbearable.

As I’ve done this route many times before by this point, there really isn’t a great deal to say. It’s largely flat, and good for a fast lap once the legs are warmed up. Unusually for a route I’d choose, this one “suffers” from having the uphill segment on the way back. Typically I prefer a gradual climb on the outward leg, and then I can ease off on the way home.

Anyway, it was good to get out. Good to get the legs going once again, and nice not to have to constantly stop / start or ride on bumpy trails. Also, it was essential to get down some kilometres – even just ~20km – to keep some hope of hitting the weekly riding goal.

I’ve definitely slacked off this week, as you might expect from a holiday week, but now I’m paying the price for all that junk food and beer.
