Weekly Review August 16th – 22nd 2021

Each week I try to review and reflect on my previous week on the bike. This allows me to see how my fitness and ability is progressing on a wider timescale than day to day. For previous weekly reviews please click here

Slightly unusual on the overview above as it shows me doing something on Monday. That wasn’t cycling – that was some walking about, unrelated. So that isn’t in the list below.

Here are this week’s rides:

Mostly indoors stuff this week, largely due to bad weather.

Over last weekend the family and I went away to Edinburgh. I don’t do a great deal of walking at the moment, so ended up with blisters and what not. This somehow led to an infection on my right big toe which needed antibiotics. Still got the swelling now, but it’s well under control.

The reason I mention this isn’t to gross you out – though that may be a side effect – but rather to say that early in the week I had to factor this in when riding. It didn’t really impact me on Tuesday, but on Wednesday it was quite a bit more sore. That’s likely due to the differing intensities of those two sessions.

Wednesday’s session was Zwift’s workout of the week, and whilst only 20 minutes, was one of the better rides for me of the five.

Thursday’s ride was easily my weakest. Mentally I just wasn’t into it, and physically I picked a low intensity ride – really just to get some kilometres on the week. Knowing I had to ride most every day without rest wasn’t exactly thrilling.

But why was this?

Well, I over indulged last weekend, so felt the need to compensate this week.

And missing Monday, I was already under the cosh to work harder for the rest of the week. With a sore toe, and the constant rain, along with just that lack of desire to do any physical exercise, I really wasn’t in the mood for this one. Would things have been different if I’d have been able to get outdoors?

Maybe.

Friday’s ride was really just a shorter effort – just to do something. This was, in my mind, combined with Wednesday’s effort to make up 1 ride. Even so, the two together weren’t even 30km… and that’s Zwift kilometres. Lame.

Saturday was the really memorable ride for me this week, and not for a good reason.

I’m not going to dwell on that ride, but in short it’s the closest I’ve come to being knocked off by **** head motorists not paying attention. If high vis and flashing lights can’t make me visible, I guess I don’t stand a chance 🙁

The week ahead is looking lovely, at least according to the 10 day forecast. We shall see if the sun and heat actually does reappear, or whether the sunshine has had it’s day for the rest of the year.

In prep for the winter ahead, I have ordered some long sleeve thermal bib tights from Sigma Sports. These are the Mavic Cosmic Elite Thermo Bib Tight I found in the sale. I’ve got two other pairs of Mavic shorts and I love them. So far all my Mavic kit has been ace.

£75 down from £140, so hopefully decent.

Ideally I will get out on the quieter country roads over the next few days.

Then later in the week the Zwift Academy 2021 starts up, so I guess I’ll be getting my sweat on for that. It’s a while since I have really pushed myself out of my comfort zone, so I’m a little bit anxious on that, truth be told. However, the rides look slightly easier than last year… but maybe I’m kidding myself. No races either. Boo.

Here’s to a good week ahead.
