Weekly Review July 3rd – 9th 2023

Each week I try to review and reflect on my previous week on the bike. This allows me to see how my fitness and ability is progressing on a wider timescale than day to day. For previous weekly reviews please click here

Another positive week, not quite doing everything I had in mind, but that was only down to forgetfulness. And the ride I did instead was probably equivalent???

Here are this week’s rides:

A fairly standard week then, where most things went to plan.

I’ve switched up now from racing Tuesdays to racing Thursdays.

What happened this week was that I started the week with SST, then did a base builder / endurance workout on Wednesday.

During Wednesday’s ride I’d had plenty of time to recon the Thursday race, and saw via both the Zwift App and their website that…

So a bit confusing. On the right it has the race down at 32km, and then in the body of the post it’s saying 23.6km.

Personally I think ~30km including warm up and cooldown stretches their talk about the ZRacing series being ideal for a ‘being done in an hour’ ideal to its limit. I certainly wasn’t.

But it was a good race. I knew I’d get my backside handed to me, and I did on the very first climb (of six) as expected. Good times. I won’t go into that yet again, but I think Zwift could improve the racing experience for the tail enders such as myself.

Come Saturday I was still really feeling it in the legs. So much for any ideas of bumping up my FTP from the 235w figure right now. I don’t know how likely it is I would have finished Saturday’s SST session had it have been 5w higher. It doesn’t sound like much, but over 40 minutes those 5 extra watts really add up.

Glad to get that over with Sunday was a far more relaxed ride. Get out on the open, quiet early morning roads and just potter along doing whatever I liked. Ideal.

So all in then, a pretty good week.

I’d have liked to have swapped Saturday’s SST for a Climb Portal ride. However I only remembered I’d thought to do that as my 5 minute warm up ended for the SST session. By then I was committed.

Ahh well, there’s always next week.

Speaking of next week, Beach Party Stage 2 is showing as 21.7km / 177m of climb for 3 laps of Seaside Sprint. I wonder if that is accurate 🙂

There’s still a discrepancy between the reported figures on the Zwift event page:

But I assume that accounts for lead in.

Basically though, the plan for the week ahead is pretty much identical for the one that’s just gone.

Start off with SST, then endurance, finishing the mid-week rides with the Stage 2 on Thursday.

For the weekend it will be Climb Portal, then outdoors if the weather permits.

All in all, things are ticking along nicely. If the weight would drop a tad I’d be more than pleased right now.
