10-12wk FTP Builder Week 4 Day 2

For tonight’s ride I went with something slightly different, though still in the same vein as usual with the FTP Builder rides. This was a fairly low intensity ride, though a bit beyond the usual long blue zone segments. To be honest, I just wanted a bit of variety, and ideally, to hit 30km in the ride.

Tonight was one of those nights where I was feeling less than enthusiastic about getting on the bike. I wasn’t in any pain, but I’d been back at work today after the Christmas break, so with a 6.10am start and 8.5 hours (10 if you count the commute) I was feeling a bit tired.

But that is when it’s easy to fall into the trap.

I knew I needed to get on the bike just to keep up the routine. Got to get back into the habit – not that I’ve slacked off, to be fair – but I typically would ride Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, taking a break on Monday and Friday. Then Saturday and Sunday are, ideally, longer / harder rides.

I’ve signed up to both the Tour of Zwift 2020 and also the January 10,000 calories challenges.

I’m looking forwards to the Tour of Zwift, that should be great. But I do have a slight doubt about the 10,000 calorie challenge.

In December I managed 11,000 calories in total. All good. I’d check November, but I figure it’s about the same, probably similar for October as well.

So, what’s the problem?

Well… a chunk of each week is the Sunday hard climb. Those are not done on Zwift. I’m not going to stop doing those, but equally I’m not going to do an extra 1000+ calories on Zwift each week to make up this “deficit”. So, I might just accept I’ll likely fail that one, and measure it by Training Peaks instead.

I quite enjoyed this ride today. It wasn’t too strenous. Pretty much just what I needed. I don’t think I could have handled yet another 6×7 minute at 150w ride… so… very… boring!

What I definitely do want to get back into is the Sweet Spot Training rides.

I’ve yet to do an SST session at my new FTP. I’m kinda nervous about that. But it’s the very best workout I’ve found yet on Zwift, so it’s the one I need to do the most.

I keep thinking I need to wait for my legs to rest up a bit before I’m going to be ready for it. Maybe that’s never going to happen?

OK, so a little disappointed to only do 460 calories today, and with that only 27km. I put the short fall in distance (target was 30km) down to covering 357m of elevation. Of course, you don’t feel that in ERG mode but you do get slowed down by it.

Tomorrow is rest day. Probably try to stay away from a beer. Not sure what Saturday will be yet. I guess with a rest day, potentially Saturday could be a SST session, but if that completely thrashes me, I won’t get to do a proper hill climb on Sunday and that’s my last day of Tacx Software free trial…

Decisions, decisions.
