Half The World Away

Back from holidays. Amazingly, came back lighter than I went. That’s what two weeks wandering around theme parks in considerable heat will do to you, I suppose.

Whilst I was away, I was thinking how to take this blog forwards. I’m going to try shorter, more concise updates in the short term. Not sure about the medium to longer term. I do like the idea of having this as a fitness tracker, and I do refer back to it at times.

OK, so I’ve had a bunch of issues with my heart rate strap. Every time I wear it, I get a bad rash. I think I’m going to replace it with a Garmin watch, though the new Fenix range is ridiculously priced. I’m not dropping £1k on a watch. I do quite like the idea of the amoled screen, though.

I really struggled early in this ride. Coming back after 2 weeks away, then a week recovering from jet lag was absolutely killer. The charts tell the right story. I felt like I’d lost half, or more of my fitness. It was hard going. It did improve towards the end of the ride.

I also think I will ride tomorrow morning, not go for a walk. More riding is required.

Also, I did not get Oasis tickets. Lame.

  1. Well, look on the bright side – the money you saved by not getting Oasis tickets can go to a Garmin watch!
I’ve not found optical HR to be very accurate, though the new Garmin watches are apparently accurate according to dcrainmaker

That did make me laugh 😀

It was the latest DC Rainmaker video about the Garmin Fenix 8 that popped up out of nowhere on my YouTube feed that sent me down this rabbit hole.

      • Well, a two week free trial isn’t long enough, so I took out a 6 month subscription. First impressions are pretty good. I think it uses ChatGPT to generate rather nice feedback on completed sessions.
The downside is that it’s another subscription, I really need to prune back on these now I’m a pensioner! Unfortunately each platform I subscribe to offer a distinct feature that I value.
In terms of insights – I find the intervals.icu data wrangling to be best, and I have several years worth of data there. I can clearly see the impact of disruption to my training schedule over the last couple of years.
        Glad you like my blog

        • I hear you regarding the subscriptions. I’ve trimmed mine back significantly now. Next on the chopping block is Amazon Prime I think. Glad you’re finding some value in it all the same.

Regarding your blog, I tried to comment on it:

From the console log, I can see it’s a 500 error:
