Hot, Sweaty, and Dead Legs

I’m not quite sure what goes wrong between strava and training peaks, but somewhere along the lines my metrics go a bit haywire. In order to keep track of my physical activity I primarily use strava, but when I exported yesterday’s walk out of there and imported the file into training peaks, somehow it thinks I did nearly 3000m of climbing. It did the same last week.

Anyway, that mess aside, yesterday I went for a walk rather than a ride. I chose to go up Pendle Hill, and picked the steep route for my way up. Once up, and thoroughly sweaty, I went on a long an meandering loop around the hill, getting a bit lost along the way, and having my (borrowed) walking boots come apart at the seams on me whilst on the opposite side of the hill. Even so, it was an enjoyable experience. Albeit a tiring one.

I already knew I wouldn’t be doing a great deal on the bike today. Yesterday’s activity clocked in at over two hours, and walking gives me hella blisters, so I’d mentally resolved to doing something fairly easy today. If there had been any doubt around that it would have been sealed when I woke up and felt how tight my thighs were feeling. Also, I slept for ages, so I knew I was definitely really tired.

Once out I found my cycling muscles were far better off than my walking muscles had led me to believe. Even so, I tried my best to behave.

Mostly I just pootled round Preston. Day time riding isn’t so bad, there’s less cars out there trying to kill you anyway. But ‘city’ riding sucks. And Preston ‘city’ centre right now is a nightmare due to roadworks everywhere. When will I learn?

At the moment it’s particularly hot here in the UK, with the hottest days still yet to come. We’re expecting to hit 31c on Monday, which is just bonkers. But today was humid rather than overly sunny. Pretty much like yesterday really. It all feels OK until either the sun comes out from behind the clouds, or you do any kind of activity. In either case, the sweat arrives.

I’m hoping to get another ride in tomorrow, with the aim to rest on Friday. For tomorrow’s ride I’m going to head out into the flat land countryside (towards the sea) and see where I get too. Honestly though, as the rambling and meandering unstructured mess that is this post attests too, my body and mind are both smashed.
