Man About Town

It’s been a nice enough week to get outdoors more than just the once. But I’ve been feeling it after the past two weekends – so much so that I’ll probably opt for a shorter ride this weekend, unless I have a sudden change of heart.

I’ve taken it easy this week, starting with two rest days on Monday / Tuesday, and then two recovery rides on Wednesday / Thursday. Today was easily the most intensive ride of the week – burning ~600 calories over the hour, rather than high 400s as I have been doing.

But that said, I still didn’t push myself too hard today. Just a few little local hills, a couple of which I went out of my way for.

What sucked about today’s ride was the busy roads. Heading out at 3-4pm on a Friday night means hitting rush hour traffic, and I managed to get one very irate prius driver cutting me off, giving me the finger and all that jazz. Fun times, considering I was in high vis, flashing lights, and am on a little bike whereas he’s in a car and didn’t bother to look or indicate. But yes, I’m sure I am in the wrong, somehow 😀

I think it’s getting to the point where some kind of helmet cam might be a good idea. To heck with the aero.

The aim today, as it often is on Friday afternoons, was to finish early, get out and follow what seems to be a fairly standard route by this point. I did venture off a couple of times today, most notably to do the Preston Golf Club drive way climb. I figured now was a good time to do it, what with the covid restrictions keeping the place shut meeting I’m less likely to get run over by some Audi driving ponce in plus fours.

My granddad used to treat the golf club like his second home, so it was nice (and also pretty sad) to get back up there for the first time since he passed away late last year.

Generally it was a nice ride. The weather was pleasant enough for finger-less gloves – nice to be out in them rather than the Marigolds. Not quite ready for the bib shorts just yet though. Be a true sign that the weather has changed when I can go out in them and a short sleeve jersey.

All being well, tomorrow will be RGT Cycling. I’ve been meaning to get on that all week, and if Sunday is an outdoors ride then that’s my last day to get that ticked off the todo list.

Until then.
