One To Forget

One to forget today. I went out with tired legs, and tired eyes. Sitting at a computer (yes, even on a Saturday) is really, really hurting my eyes at the moment. Got an appointment – finally – with the opticians to have an eye test. Fairly sure glasses are required at this late stage of my life. My 30’s have been rough.

I set out today to do two things:

  1. Get out of the house, do a bit of exercise, but mainly chill out and enjoy the last dregs of sun before the weather turns and Autumn lands;
  2. And do a bit of exploring.

There’s a big loop around Preston called the Guild Wheel. I’ve never ridden large parts of it. In fact, I heard – second hand – that another cyclist I kinda know once said “real cyclists don’t ride the Guild Wheel”.

Well, I hate snobbery. But I must admit it’s never been that appealing.

And after today’s foray, I can’t say I was missing out on much. It felt like large swathes of it were better suited to mountain bikes, and / or dog walkers looking to find a local corpse or two.

So, aside from seeing bits of Preston I never knew existed, or have wondered what may be down a street or two before but never been that bothered to find out, today was largely one to forget.

I guess it could all be summed up when I was kinda heading home and I rode down towards Preston’s College (yes, the apostrophe S is important to them). I came in hot, it’s a short stretch of flat, then a dip, then a short climb. Last time I did this route I set a new PB. Today… not so much. I was saying to myself – out loud – that I just didn’t have it in me, and sure enough, I gave up about a third of the way up the small climb.

Can’t say I’m surprised.

Nothing about me wanted to do this route today. I came back more frustrated than when I’d set off.

Anyway, hopefully tomorrow will be a bit better. Honestly, my legs are tired. It’s not even been that big of a week. Training Peaks has it down as 109km so far, including this ride. Maybe it was the route. I dunno… just looking for excuses.

As titled: definitely one to forget.
