Smashing The Endurance Ride

Wednesday is probably better spent on the turbo. Why? Because outside I have no control.

Bit of a brag there.

But more on that later.

At work, today has been meetings. Every other Wednesday it’s end of sprint and that means back to back meetings.

As such, I am usually so sick of staring at a computer screen that I cannot help but hear the calling of the real world. Such was the case today.

However first I needed to change my tyre.

Last Wednesday’s outdoor ride saw a puncture just 6km or so into the ride. A bit of a nightmare, but as part of that I did my first successful roadside repair.

One thing that was unexpectedly easy enough during that repair was getting the tyre off and on again.

Rather foolishly, the spare tube I had been carrying around in my saddlebag was a previously repaired puncture. Why Chris, why?

With my roadside repair done, I always knew I would need to redo the replacement once home. Of course I put that off. Until today.

Unfortunately today it was much harder to get the tyre back on. My poor thumbs. In the end, I watched this video which really helped and is full of good tips:

Highly recommended.

At the very end though I couldn’t get the final bit done. Fortunately I then remembered my trusty tyre bead jack, which made light work of what had been a really painful task. Glad I had that on hand.

So, bike repairs done, I went out.

Unfortunately by that time I only had ~40 minutes before my next meeting.

That meant that I felt quite pressured to get my kilometres in, on what should have been a fairly relaxed ride. Instead it became a bit of a thrash, and I had to keep reminding myself that I ought to be taking it easy.

Whoops.

This ultimately culminated in a full gas effort on the hill climb above. Why I am pleased with that effort is because I would normally fade towards the end of a sprint, but I must have given that a proper effort for about 20-25 seconds. That felt like a hugely positive push.

I was dead after that though 🙂

Regardless, my time was up. I’d stayed out right til the edge, and arrived back already late for my 2pm meeting.

Oh well, another Wednesday in the books.

I guess tomorrow is going to be 6 to 8 laps of Glasgow Crit Circuit. I will be getting whooped on that, and no mistake. I think that’s why I didn’t care about taking it easy today. It’s not like I’m saving myself for that at this point.
