Weekly Review April 29th – May 5th 2024

Each week I try to review and reflect on my previous week on the bike. This allows me to see how my fitness and ability is progressing on a wider timescale than day to day. For previous weekly reviews please click here

A mixed up week because I had to go away with work on Tuesday and Wednesday, and that also took its toll on me with the long days and travel. But generally pretty pleased with everything so far, and overall progress seems to be going in the right direction.

Here are this week’s rides:

I got an absolute soaking on Monday night’s ride, but was glad to have gotten it in all the same. Parts of my kit – my saddle bag and under the boa straps on my shoes – still have grit on them. It’s nasty stuff that. But I did make sure to wash the bike down in full, even though it was chucking it down when I got back. I couldn’t leave that stuff on my bike for two or more days whilst I was away.

After that I did a recovery ride pretty much on Thursday, and then got stuck into the Zwift Spring Training series on Saturday.

All in all, decent enough.

The graph below shows things are moving in the right direction. I’m almost back to my previous fitness high, which I have to say I can actually feel right now. That’s good. I do feel like I’m on the up, which is a nice place to be when you’ve been down and low.

I’d like to get back on to the online platforms some more, do some climbs, do some racing and what have you.

But.

And it’s a big but.

I don’t know if you got the news yet, but Zwift are hiking their prices.

My monthly subs are going up from £12.99 to £17.99.

I honestly don’t know how they justify a 40% increase in subs. Last I heard they had done a massive layoff, and I think it’s fair to say their product hasn’t noticeably improved in the past twelve months. It still looks like it was made in 1997, and racing is still a complete mess (in my opinion, of course).

So I have cancelled my subs and will be moving to MyWhoosh, which to be fair I have already pretty much done – but I’ve had crashing issues on there a lot, so have paused that for the moment. I think them ramping their subs going into Summer time was ambitious, but greed’s greed.

Anyway, I still have my subs paid for until pretty much this time next month so I hopefully will see out the Spring Training series, and then I’ll be moving platforms.

I completely understand everyone’s costs have gone up. It’s just, you know, so have mine. And what is a no-brainer at £12.99 is a … actually, you know, I don’t think I’m getting my money’s worth here kind of price at £17.99.
