Each week I try to review and reflect on my previous week on the bike. This allows me to see how my fitness and ability is progressing on a wider timescale than day to day. For previous weekly reviews please click here.
Back to normal this week with the planned rides going ahead, albeit with a slight switch up due to some weather funk, and then Sunday being a long recovery walk rather than a ride.
But overall, happy with the progress and pleased with what I got done.
Here are this week’s rides:
- Tuesday – SST Leads To Sore Knee
- Wednesday – Wednesday Base Builder Session
- Thursday – Last Sunny Day For A While
- Saturday – Zwift Beach Party: Stage 3 – Mech Isle Loop
Starting the week off with the SST session is, I think, probably the most important ride of the week. I’ve said in the past that SST feels like the single biggest bang-for-buck riding that I can do.
It’s an efficient and effective workout that really does seem to yield steady progress.
Perhaps I should do more of them.
The one downside to the SST sessions is they really take it out on my knees. Following a blog comment I’ve ordered myself some Look KEO grey cleats, which have now arrived but I haven’t yet fitted them to my shoes. Probably should do that before tomorrow’s ride.
Then Wednesday was a typical endurance session – killed off by taking my work on the ride with me. It’s one good way to see through those longer, less interesting rides. Not something I want to make a habit of, though.
Thursday’s ride was the unexpected one.
I would normally aim to race on Thursdays, but with the prospect of a very wet weekend ahead – and with Thursday being nice and sunny – I swapped things around and went out for a lunch time rip.
And what a ride that was.
Faster and harder than planned, I think I punished myself a little much – but I was pleased with the result. 30km in 1 hour, and with some climbing to boot. I grabbed a PR on the climb and wasn’t flat out throughout the whole ride – so a decent pace for my standards.
I do think that did nothing good for my knees though.
Then Saturday was race day… and that race wasn’t much fun really. In terms of the workout it was worthwhile, but the actual race? Yeah, not so much.
OK, so that just leaves weight, and the week ahead.
Pleased with the weight direction overall. It ticks up, then down, but it’s mostly trending down. I haven’t updated Zwift yet. But once I’ve been under 68kg for a few more weigh-ins, I will be doing. Then hopefully back down to the 66’s in a few week’s time.
So it’s more of the same this week.
SST tomorrow, endurance Wednesday, race Thursday.
All being well, I will do a climb on Saturday and an easy ride on Sunday. I swapped that out this week for a 10km walk and destroyed my feet in the process. Can I catch a break?
It sometimes doesn’t feel like I can, particularly with the day I’ve had today. Just getting finished up and it’s 10pm. Bath then bed.
