What A Stitch Up

Back on the treadmill after a weeks unplanned break and today I had in mind doing 8km if at all possible, with a target run time of 43 minutes. That would be 53 minutes total with a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down.

Sadly it didn’t quite work out that way. I did get in the 5 minute warm up but then when I went to set my run goal in zwift I put in my target time of 43 minutes and it took five minutes off straight away (I realised after starting running) based on the already passed time in the session. No big deal but coupled with zero on screen markers for the goal passing by like when using the distance goals it annoyed me from the off.

For this one I picked a route called Chilli Pepper which went from down town Watopia, out to the volcano and then back via the reverse zwift kom bridge. I sadly did not complete the full 8km route.

I tried.

Something that I’ve not experienced before, as best I can remember, is getting multiple stitches in a workout session. I had eaten lunch about an hour before and was only drinking water before hand. During the run I only sipped a bit of water every couple of kilometres. But after about 20 minutes I got a stitch. And then it went. Then about 5 minutes later it came back. And then went. And so on several times.

By the 44 minute marker I knew my actual run time was only 38 minutes, and whilst I’d done 5k I was far short of my intended goal for the session. But I was hurting. I figured I’d take a break and then try to walk it off. That worked in so much as the stitch went but when I tried to pick my pace back up it immediately reappeared. At that point I began to lose motivation. And ultimately I ended up cutting the session off around then.

Not great and a 100 calorie difference between what the treadmill reported and what zwift reported. But I feel like I worked hard for the time I ran. Not a new PB pace but it’s miles in the bank.

There is always next week.
