The British countryside is, in my humble opinion, really rather beautiful all year round. Its certainly at its most pretty in Summer, but even when it’s cold and windy and feeling absolutely autumnal, the views are far more welcoming to me than the gray, concrete jungle of the city and suburbs. Though even the urban decay, stressed out rush hour motorists, and petrol fumes are preferable to me after 8 hours in front of a computer as of late.
Fortunately the sun was shining come 4pm, and if you believe the forecast, we may yet get a couple more days of outdoor friendly weather (sunny but not hot) over the weekend, before rain resumes on Monday. If that’s not a metaphor for my current work / life balance, I don’t know what is.
I didn’t ride yesterday. Why not? Laziness? Could be. But from my point of view it’s how tense and stressed my legs feel. Well worked. And today they didn’t feel much better.
So it was somewhat unsurprising that Garmin decided the whole ride was unproductive.
As has been the case before when the ride has been classified as unproductive, I didn’t actually feel that bad during the ride. One things for certain, I went out with bad eye strain (having to start wearing glasses, as of Sunday when my prescription is ready), and I came home without. Yet, as I sit here typing this, my eyes are beginning to hurt once again. Old age sucks.
It’s really interesting how the Garmin software can detect when I’m losing fitness. I guess I really should have taken today as a rest day also. I thought I might. I had kinda thought I would take Thursday and Friday off, then do the Ramp Test on Saturday. The thing is, and I keep saying it, but I’m not sure how many more of these outdoor after work rides I’m going to get, and when the sun is out, I’m way more inclined to get kitted up and head out, than get kitted up and spend yet another hour in front of my computer, be it on Zwift or otherwise.
Now as above, the weather looks good for the weekend. This means I want to get in another ~30km ride tomorrow – as I have a meal out tomorrow evening, so need to free up some calories. And then Sunday… well, ideally I’d like to get in a longer ride – 50km or so – as I haven’t done this in a while. That said, I won’t be beating myself up about that if not, as my work contract finishes next Friday (huzzah!) and I’ll then have some free time in the day times to get out and do something a bit more varied. At least for a week or so, and then I’ll either be in a new role (I’ve been promised one), or stressed out trying to find work again.
Fun fun.
