Deer-y Me

Truthfully I couldn’t be bothered this morning. Were it not for a Strava challenge (Band of Climbers It’s Only a Hill) I might not have even bothered today.

However, I knew I had ~60m left to meet the goal and only one day to make it, so why not? I guess that’s one of the (many) benefits of that sort of gamification of exercise, it tricks mugs like me into getting out early doors on a Sunday morning to earn some virtual nonsense:

Anyway this ride was far from hilly. I was surprised to have covered 229m of ascent in the whole route as I have no idea where all those metres came from. I guess they all add up.

Most I just took it easy this morning. I went down to Preston town centre to see this big fire but there wasn’t anything to be seen from the road. In hindsight, perhaps I should have gone around the back roads. But honestly I wasn’t that bothered about seeing a smouldering pile of rubble.

After I’d been down there I was struggling for places to go, and kinda just aiming for any route that was as long and flat and uninterrupted as possible. A better bet would have been to pick a deliberate circuit, maybe out to Longridge and then back. Hindsight is 20/20.

In a way I’m kicking myself for not doing an SST session today. Like I said at the start, I couldn’t be bothered at all. The thought of getting on the turbo and working hard wasn’t drawing me.

What I’m hoping is that with tomorrow being a rest day, I feel better about myself come Tuesday. If that is the case, and it’s not too sunny outside, I will force myself indoors and get that SST session done. Then it’s not praying on my mind all week.

Oh, I just remembered.

There was one other cool thing this morning.

There’s a bit of a country track I like to use on recovery days – part of Preston’s The Guild Wheel. Well, I was down there on my lonesome, and as I came around a blind corner I was maybe 10 feet away from this large, and startled deer.

I’m almost certain that’s the closest I’ve ever been to a deer. Big, it was. About as big as a fully grown Labrador, but with long spindly legs. It took one look at me and bolted. I wish I had a front facing camera on the bike, that would have been a cool shot. Oh well, nice memory all the same.
