Indoor Cycling – Weekly Review April 29th – May 5th 2019

Each week Zwift sends me an email summarising my activity for the week. For previous weekly reviews click here.

Either something has gone wrong at Zwift’s end, or they have decided to drop the achievement / badges part of the email. Maybe this is a thing past level 10? Bit of a shame.

This week I met both of my goals, but only just. My goals being:

  • Ride 100km or more
  • Ride 3 hours or more

I talked a little more about Zwift’s Goals in this post. I then had the thought that maybe hooking into Strava’s API and making some personal challenges might be cool. Then on Saturday night (yes, this is how I spend my weekends) I watched this awesome talk on using a super interesting and cool programming language called Elixir to interact with the Strava API:

But on visiting the page, I was really saddened to hear Strava have shut the project down.

As a fellow developer who has had projects shut down by 3rd parties before, I can deeply sympathise with his position. In my case I haven’t based any future projects on third party sites ever since. Once bitten, twice shy, and all that.

Due to some re-arranged family commitments, I didn’t get chance to ride early on Saturday, and after a couple of beers later in the evening, decided that I’d have a “rest day” instead.

On Sunday I did a ~30km ride which is down from my usual 50km rides. Now, there was a good reason for this. I was misled (read: fooled by my own stupidity) into believing Bank Holiday Monday would run the Innsbruck map. Instead, it turned out to be another rendition of Richmond. D’oh.

I’d saved myself, somewhat, for a larger climb. And whilst I did do this, I kinda regret not having done a 50km ride on Sunday. Oh well.

This week I unlocked level 12 on Zwift, which opens up Alpe Du Zwift. All good, and maybe I will get in a practice run ahead of the seventh stage of the Tour of Watopia. Maybe.

For the past two weeks I had a few days where I rode both morning and evening. I may try to do that one day per week moving forwards. Again, maybe. It’s really hard to plan these things as I greatly prefer early morning exercise when I’m still fresh.

Overall I’m happy with my progress this week. I am basing my work rate on two of my strongest ever weeks, so perhaps am being a little harsh.
