Some of my favourite or most memorable rides have been those taken after work. There’s something so freeing about getting out on to the quiet evening roads, in the sun, bib shorts and short sleeve jersey, topping up the tan and getting in a solid workout.
Tonight wasn’t really any of that.
But it was the first time I can remember in a good few months that a Friday evening ride was a possibility. Light enough. Dry enough. Shame it wasn’t hot, or enjoyable out there on the roads.
See, I hit rush hour. Big time. I hadn’t really thought it through. I wanted to do an easy spin. Heck, I should have just taken the night off a proper rest. But no. I saw it was dry and light and I thought why not just spin out the legs, take it easy, pootle about?
Well, yeah… it wasn’t a bad ride for any particular reason. It just wasn’t that fun. Everywhere was busy. I couldn’t settle into any kind of rhythm without having to duck out of traffic or avoid dog walkers or have to get off to go through those funny little wooden gates that seem to be everywhere once you’re off road.
Anyway, 30 minutes outdoors. ~330 calories. It was worth it to earn a guilt free beer.
