Bit of a wonky title for this post. No running. And also not chasing the sun, as such… rather cycling early to try to beat the heat.
But Cycle, Cycle, Beat The Sun is a terrible post title.
So here we are.
It’s a choice lately between three options:
- Don’t ride
- Ride early
- Ride late
By mid day now it’s well and truly into the mid to high 20’s, and by afternoon / 4pm we’re seeing consistent 29c or higher.
I know some of you reading this live in climates where 29c is basically winter, but here in the UK this is abnormal. Or, perhaps, the new normal. Either way, I’m not yet fully adjusted.
I’ve enjoyed my late night rides this week, but they aren’t the best fit for me. I’ve got to get home, get showered and get the kids to bed… and it’s all a bit rushed. Better to go early.
The other benefit of going early is I’m on less of a time limit. Although that is somewhat impacted by it getting ever hotter the longer I stay out.
I’ve been really easy on myself this week.
After my crappy FTP test results I’ve been taking it at a much more relaxed pace on every subsequent ride.
That’s worked out pretty well anyway with the heat wave.
As I’m both back at work and the temperature is due to drop again / rain incoming from next week, I’m ‘hoping’ to get back on the turbo and put in a few sessions on Wahoo SYSTM. I’ve got my sub sorted now so that also includes RGT Cycling. Looking forwards to the change.
But yeah… it’s hot. Cycling in or outdoors during this sort of heat is nuts.
Boy do I wish I had air con.
