Perhaps not the most ideal conditions for an outdoor ride today. But I needed to get out. Besides, I figured I would only be going slow, so the risks of coming undone were probably fairly minuscule.
Anyway, within less than ten minutes of setting off, I’d felt the back wheel slipping out from under me as I took a corner, and that got the old ticker going, I can tell you. Fortunately, as it happened so early in the ride, I think it gave me the kick up the arse I needed to ensure I kept to a sensible speed. And that’s good because this was supposed to be a recovery ride.
Now, all that said, I did manage to choose some stupid roads, side streets, and pathways that were either clearly icy, very slippy with wet mushy leaves and stuff, or worse, a combo of the two. At one point I was having to climb up a little slope to some traffic lights and was losing grip massively on every pedal stroke. Fortunately that was on a very quiet road, or it might have been terrifying.
Knowing it was cold, I’d gone out in my thickest / warmest winter gloves. These are technically snowboarding gloves, so are warm and toasty for sure. They are also big and kinda too bulky to ride with. More reasons to go slow. But I wasn’t suffering from frosty fingers at any point today.
So overall not a bad ride.
Next up is a rest day, and then Stage 4 of the Tour de Zwift will be well underway over the weekend. It looks like a fairly easy ride to be fair, so should have that one comfortably done on Saturday afternoon. Hope so. As that will leave me with a free ride on Sunday, which will (fingers crossed) be another outdoor ride.
It does seem the cold snap is finally here, so no regrets on getting out as much as I have done. I’m also enjoying being pushed on the Tour de Zwift. So yeah, right now, enjoying myself for sure.
