Weekly Review September 13th – 19th 2021

Each week I try to review and reflect on my previous week on the bike. This allows me to see how my fitness and ability is progressing on a wider timescale than day to day. For previous weekly reviews please click here

Not a bad week overall, could have done slightly better by getting a ride in on Sunday morning. But happy enough with how it went all the same.

Here are this week’s rides:

As the nights are starting to draw in, the opportunities for after work riding are slimming down. Fortunately it’s been warm lately, so there’s still been plenty of riding with bib shorts, but the long sleeves are back in force.

Keen readers may recall last week I had a bit of a scare regarding some weird chest pains. Fortunately, whatever that was, it went as quickly as it came. Not had any to complain about since – perhaps it was just crazy indigestion. A sure sign of getting old.

Anyway I took it easy on my first two rides of the week, because I was concerned about those chest pains. And then by Thursday, convinced it was a false alarm, I was itching to do something a little more strenuous.

On both Thursday and Friday I pushed myself a lot harder.

Thursday’s ride was the Zwift Academy Workout #3. I’d put that at maybe #2 out of the 3 I’ve now done, in terms of intensity. It pushed me, but not to my limit by any means. A good workout, a decent calorie burn, but a little disappointing on the distance covered.

Friday was a chance to head outdoors, and I decided to really push myself that day. Or, well, for the first and largest portion of the ride. Can’t really complain about that, aside from a near miss with a car / trailer combo. Sadly that’s becoming ever more common for me lately. One day these ride reports might stop, and if they do, you will know why.

After Friday I decided to set my sights on a a couple of rides over the weekend.

Firstly I’d do the Zwift Academy Recovery ride. And then I’d do a Zwift race on the Sunday.

That was the plan, anyway.

Instead I went outdoors on Saturday, and quite late in the day, too. That ride was in no way recovery – though I couldn’t tell you what it actually was either.

When I got home and checked the stats for the ride, and for the week, I was happy enough with my progress on the week.

Then on Sunday I just don’t know why I didn’t ride. I mucked around in the morning, and could have gone out for a longer one as the kids weren’t out that morning so wasn’t on a timer. Instead I had two cups of coffee and messed around on a computer game. That’s living. But it’s not riding.

For the week ahead I’m still wanting to do a Zwift race.

I need to fit that in around the ZA 2021 Recovery ride, and Workout #4. Not sure when I’ll fit that in, but the priority is to get both of the ZA rides done so I keep to their schedule.

Ideally I will get outdoors at least once, too. Right now, lunch time rides are an easier option than later in the day anyway, so that’s all good. Not sure how long that might continue on for, so need to make the most of it.
