Control, Control, You Must Learn Control!

More so than yesterday, today I really wasn’t in the mood to exercise. Partly because I’d kinda mentally resigned to riding only 4 days this week, and partly due to laziness.

By 4pm I’d had my chocolate bar, my magnum lollipop, and a fistful of fizzy Harribos. These are all the post ride treats I usually save on riding day to give me something to look forward too once done.

However, by 4.15 I was feeling, well, a bit bored. I’d messed up with tea, meaning the chicken wouldn’t be ready to 6.45, so had a bunch of time to kill.

What better way than with a quick Zwift session?

So, I decided that whilst I wasn’t in the mood for working hard, I’d treat myself to a free ride. 10km. That’s all. Any pace, any cadence, just 10km and I would be done. Oh, and on Tempus Fugit, too, so nice and flat.

The first few kilometres weren’t exactly fun. It took concerted effort to get the legs turning. I could feel my body protesting. But crucially, I was on the bike. The biggest hurdle was done.

By the time I hit 10km I was feeling loosened up and not yet ready to get off. Ten kilometres on Tempus Fugit is the first turnaround, as best I recall, so I decided I’d head back – but drop the tempo a bit.

Shortly afterwards I found myself picking up the pace again. This was, in part, in hope of hitting 20km by 30 minutes. Turns out that didn’t happen, it was more like 32 minutes. Though by then I was well on my way, loosened up, and feeling much better about everything.

Ultimately I continued on and did over 30km, ~550 calories, and 55 minutes of riding. Really happy with that, considering less than an hour earlier I didn’t even want to ride.

Also, looking at the graphs today I did a good job of keeping under control without relying on ERG. So again, another win.

All being well, tomorrow will be a replay of Stage 8 of the TdZ 2021, but I’m not sure which circuit to pick from yet. Either New York (with its 300m+ of climbing), or the much less climby (and shorter) Champs-Élysées.
