At the end of my previous ride I was saying how I really ought to step it up a gear. I’ve slacked off, to an extent. Certainly after my second bout of Covid I’ve not really regained the form I was in.
Now, I’m not hugely concerned about this. At the very least I do my ~5 rides a week, each ride being on average in the 400-600 calorie range, and approximately one hours worth of activity. All added up, that’s a good chunk of exercise over the course of the year, and considerably more than I used to be doing. Which was none.
Also, I’m not training for anything in particular. Just for my own personal fitness. So there’s no urgency to stretch myself. Maybe that’s why I’ve plateaued, or started to fall off slightly.
Anyway, I decided to step it up a notch today, and do a harder workout. One I used to do fairly frequently, and one that I haven’t done in a while now. Partly that’s because I’ve been so busy outdoors for, frankly, most of this year. But partly, like I say, I’ve been slacking off.
Why do a harder ride when an easier one is available?
Enough of that.
I felt this one today. Not going to lie, even before I got on the bike my legs felt stiff. Not sure why, I’d done nothing since Thursday and all my other rides have been fairly laid back as of late.
Building this one up in my head to be worse than it was, I wasn’t much looking forward to working ~50-80 watts harder than I have been doing when on the turbo. But you know, it wasn’t so bad.
The hardest block was certainly the final 5 minute on, at which point my legs were protesting and I was huffing and puffing. For just 50 minutes, this one is a beast.
Anyway, it feels good to have bagged this one today. I don’t know what I might do tomorrow. The weather here as of late is utter garbage, so it may / likely will be another indoor ride tomorrow. I have no idea what’s available, but I would quite fancy a social / group ride. That’s something I’ve not done in ages.
But now I must depart and go for my brother’s birthday curry. Oh, maybe that was some kind of inspiration for doing this one – build up that calorie deficit 🙂
