Way, waaay back, back when I were just a lad (read: about two years ago) and I had just started on this here cycling journey, someone wise said to me: it never gets easier, you just get faster.
Now, the truth is, after yesterday, I don’t actually want to get faster. Or, perhaps more accurately, I didn’t feel like riding any faster.
Not even 10w faster.
Yes, having bumped up from 234w to 255w has led to my lovely routine 10-12wk FTP Builder Week 5 Day 1 session jumping from 150w to 160w.
I wasn’t for having that.
Fortunately it was super easy to bump down to 90% effort and get back to 150%. I just couldn’t face it. Not today.
Actually, the whole point of doing a recovery effort today was because I came out of yesterday’s ride with a sore right knee. I’m happy to report I’ve had no pain since last night. That’s not to say doing a hard effort today would have been wise though.
Also yesterday I said I would not take 255w as accurate, and maybe opt for 245w instead. But before I knock it down I am going to try an SST session at 255w just to see how I get on. My theory being that if I start riding / training at a higher intensity, ultimately I should (perhaps hope / pray) adapt to the increased pace.
And that can only be a good thing, right?
Well, I need to get through one of those sessions before I go all irrational. And as it’s Christmas on Saturday, I may leave it till Sunday to test that theory. However, that does leave me with a conundrum:
Do I ride tomorrow?
I really, really want to head outdoors. So I might just do that, weather be damned, tomorrow dinner time. Be nice to get a bit of fresh air and some variation from the turbo.
But for now, rest.
I really, really want to ride outdoors tomorrow – weather be damned. I might take the mountain bike though in case it’s icy. Have a Merry Christmas! Spring can’t come soon enough.
I think that’s the right attitude Robert π No risk of ice here, it’s 9c at the moment. Might even risk it in my bib shorts π
Have a great Christmas too, and if I don’t hear from you sooner, a happy new year also π π π
