Zwift FTP Builder Week 8 Day 1

This evening was a little unusual. I’ll leave a little mystery in there as I don’t want to go into why.

What I will say is I wanted to mix things up today and ride on RGT Cycling. However, for whatever reason, the trainer and bike combo I was on somehow caused a weird conflict and ended up sending the virtual fly wheel into over drive.

In short, as I sat on the bike – stationary both in game, and in real life – the turbo trainer span up to max and made a horrendous whirring sound. If you’ve ever used a laptop that’s got far too hot, you will know the kind of sound I’m referring too.

Needless to say, we abandoned that idea, and switched back to Zwift.

Trusty old Zwift.

Anyway, quitting out of RGT Cycling did not send the virtual flywheel into spin down mode. Only when we got to the Zwift trainer synchronisation settings did things return to normal. Very, very odd.

Not wanting to do too much this evening, and with an unusual schedule to keep, I opted for the FTP Builder Week 8 Day 1 workout. Essentially 5 blocks of 7 minutes at 130w.

This sort of thing is my recovery ride.

Even so, it’s still a sweaty affair. You might not think it, but keeping the legs turning over at 90+rpm really gets the perspiration pouring.

There was very little to screenshot on this ride. This is a fairly straightforward workout.

What I did find – in one of the few moments I wasn’t alt+tabbed out watching YouTube – was that I got a random unlock.

This seems to be happening more and more in the recent Zwift patch. I’ve not checked out the new addition yet. In truth, by the end of the workout I had to get off the bike pronto, and I had forgotten all about it.

What I do like about the latest Zwift patch is the “always on” ride on marker for anyone doing an FTP test.

From experience, on that test you need all the help you can get. Brutal is not the word.

Perhaps I should have opted for a flatter course this evening.

Not that you can feel it on a structured workout, but the distance metrics are what I’m shooting for. Anything to burn down that 100km target.

All being well, I will do a true free ride tomorrow. More cadence work. I’m still struggling to find a consistent rhythm.

With an hour on the bike at a higher wattage, I should be able to do 30+km tomorrow. This might mean Thursday off the bike, and see what happens on Friday. Not sure yet.

One thing that caught my eye at the end of this ride was the 1 hour wattage output. 189w, I was impressed by this. Better than I expected. I wonder when I did that.
