Today was supposed to be a rest day. But I’m kinda thinking of doing my Advent of Cycling challenge again this year, and as I’m still undecided on whether to fully commit, I didn’t want to definitely blow it on Day 2.
However, I also didn’t want to, nor have time to do a longer workout. Fortunately Zwift caters to the time poor with their 30 minutes or less workout options.
From the list I picked one of the very shortest, an 18 minute workout called Instant Inferno.
To keep with the theme I chose to ride this one on the Volcano Circuit.
Quick 18 minute high intensity workout to send some calories into a fiery inferno. The session is 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off at various intensities and recoveries.
Zwift’s description for Instant Inferno workout
Amazingly, during the 18 minutes we manage to hit 34 different intervals. As above, each one is only 30 seconds long.
The longest two intervals are the 1 minute warm up and the 1 minute cool down. If you’re used to the longer workouts then that first minute goes by so quickly… it’s almost like jumping straight in. Usually it takes me a good 30-45 seconds to get my cadence up.
Another unusual thing about this one is that considering how short it is, Zwift certainly pack in the on screen info. With that in mind, and the length, I’m guessing this workout is aimed at very casual riders. It felt kinda different from the usual workout content I consume.
Anyway, a fun little effort to grab 10kms extra on the week and keep the streak alive.
I’m guessing if I do choose to continue on with the challenge then Mondays and Fridays will likely see me trying most of these short and sweet workouts. But beyond that I’m not sure of the value of this workout in particular for my personal riding goals.
Onwards, to the weekend.
