Saturday’s SST attempt was a massive struggle. Yesterday I ran, and today my legs overall were not feeling great. It wasn’t a strong starting point to think about re-doing the SST session.
But I was determined.
Reckoning I wouldn’t get through another attempt – just yet – at 100% – I dropped the FTP bias down such that I wouldn’t be doing the 230/210s I did on Saturday, but instead be doing 220/200s.
It still felt absolutely knackering.
However I did manage to complete it. So that’s something.
I said yesterday that depending on how I got on today, I would look to bump it by 5w next time, then 5w again, with the plan to get back up to 230/210s.
Truthfully I don’t think I’m ready to bump it, yet. That was a tough session, and had me working hard enough. I think another one at that level is a good idea, though whether I do that tomorrow, or Saturday, or even next week is up for debate.
At some point, either tomorrow or Saturday, I need to do the 6th Stage of the Tour de Zwift 2024 Run, which is my final event. But I feel like I ought to do something slightly lighter also this week. A tempo or even endurance session, as thrashing myself every single ride / run isn’t (or wasn’t) showing any big leaps in progress.
One thing I did have time to do during this ride was to think. And I came to the conclusion that what is probably the issue, overall, is that I mainly do the same style of riding over and over. Usually riding 3-4x a week at the moment, indoors, often the same type of race or workout.
What I probably need to do is vary it up. Longer rides. That’s likely the answer. Not necessarily longer, harder rides. Just longer rides overall. A year or so ago I was fairly frequently doing 2-3 hour rides, and that’s just completely stopped in recent months. I don’t remember my last 2 hour+ ride, that’s how long ago it was.
Not sure how I’m going to change this in the immediate future, as outdoors is still kinda off the cards, and I don’t have any big indoors events on the horizon either.
For now though, I have a week or so worth of plan, and I will reassess over the weekend.
