Hell in the Pix-cell

Sweet Jimminy Christmas. I know these sessions are supposed to be intensive – 90-95% of FTP for 40 minutes after all – but I still feel maybe the intensity is just a bit too high still for me. I don’t think I’ve got my FTP back to whatever it was pre-crash, and so boy howdy do I suffer during these sessions.

However, after the fact it all seems worth it.

And today I didn’t want to quit after the third ‘on’ block. Mentally I knew I could get through it, but jeepers it’s a brutal slog. A sweaty wet mess of a slog, in fact.

Sometimes I start these sessions and in the first few minutes of work I don’t feel so bad. But not today. Immediately my legs were complaining. Fortunately they settled down a bit, but they never truly stopped.

Recovering at 3.2w/kg, whilst epic for my stamina or whatever, is super taxing. Aside from some battery related mishaps with my heart rate monitor, I’m fairly sure I never dropped below 170bpm for the full 40 minutes today. At its worst it was in the low 180s, which is pretty crazy even for me.

Regardless, I’m glad to have completed it and got it out of the way. For this week, at least.

The weather is still terrible. Lots of rain so the prospect of heading out is non-existent anyway. If this continues it will be another Zwift session on Saturday. I’m entertaining the prospect of a race, but at the same time I’m anticipating the prospect of a hangover as I have a wedding to attend tomorrow. So who knows. Maybe any bike activity will be simply a bonus.

With that in mind I may choose to ride tomorrow. I quite like the idea of doing another Zwift workout, but maybe the workout of the week or something. One I haven’t done before. But it all depends as being a bit of a bloke, I have no idea of the schedule tomorrow. It’s possibly all a pipe dream. Anyway, if not, I can be happy enough knowing I’ve done my share of week day rides already.
