4wk FTP Booster Week 2 Day 1 – HIT 80% FTP #2

The weather outside has reverted to the Northern mean. Rain a-plenty as I pedalled away indoors, though there was possibly even more water on the ground next to my bike after this ride than remained on the floor after the intermittent rain showers.

It’s crazy how much I sweat indoors. And of course, today I forgot my towel.

Anyway, this one wasn’t super intense.

Today’s ride was part of Zwift’s 4wk FTP Booster program, this one being the “Week 2 Day 1 – HIT 80% FTP #2” session, taken at an FTP of 225w.

What I really wanted from today’s ride was a long, green session. What’s that? Zone 3? I never know.

Essentially I wasn’t in the mood for anything too intense. Just an hour or so on the bike, and ideally 30km or more covered.

I had a couple of programming problems to think through whilst on the ride today, so large chunks of the session went by without me really paying a great deal of attention to what was happening on screen. This kinda goes some way to explaining my erratic cadence.

What I will say is I find it difficult to think on the bike.

This isn’t something I was ever really expecting. I like the solitude / isolation aspect of cycling. Once I get into a rhythm I don’t really have much going on in my head.

This is sometimes a good thing. It’s nice to switch off every day (more or less) and not think, for a change.

But sometimes it’s not ideal. Sometimes I need to think, and if I don’t come away with a solution, it kinda feels like I “wasted” an hour. In some regards anyway.

So it’s pretty hard to see but today’s cadence wasn’t smooth. Though it was probably an improvement on yesterday.

I’d have to say that spending time outdoors has messed up my indoor mojo. What I experience is probably amplified 10 or 100 fold by the pros, and maybe that’s why so few outdoor pros translate into Zwift race winners.

I think I’m probably done for week day rides at this point.

All things being well, I am scheduled in for a 4pm Pride Ride on Saturday – that’s probably not going to be too intense.

And then Sunday I’m hoping very much to get outdoors and do a longer ride with a short, but steep climb thrown in. Hopefully the weather is semi decent (or better) o
