A week off the bike. Actually, just a little bit over. And boy, did I pay for that today?
Turns out that sitting around in your dressing gown eating chocolate, mince pies, and drinking booze is not conducive to making exercise any easier.
I wasn’t going easy on myself today. With a full week’s rest in the legs and mind, I decided I ought to smash out something fairly challenging. Albeit, not quite as challenging as it might otherwise have been, had I got a noticeable FTP bump last year. That feels odd to say. Or type.
Opting for Sweet Spot Training, I was aware that usually I feel like … woah, this is kinda hard work within the first couple of minutes of the first block kicking off. Today that was more like ‘first 45 seconds’. Yowser.
But equally I know I can get through these sessions because, well, I have done them many, many times. However I haven’t actually done an SST now since October, which was a bit of an eye opener. That is not to say I’ve slacked, but the hardcore regime of Zwift Academy workouts and rides has filled up my schedule, leaving no room for other things.
I wonder if this will persist with the starting of the Tour de Zwift? That looks less intensive, but I guess that is up for me to decide whether I try to do both race and ride each week.
However, regardless of how consistent I was during the workout (not super consistent as it happens), the main thing is getting that fitness / cycling regime back underway. First day of the new year off to a good start, on that front.
The only downside of having that week off? Well, I lost my Zwift streak! Can’t believe it. I know it’s a cheesey marketing tactic to keep people subscribed, and dammit I wasn’t going to get suckered into it, but it annoyed me to lose it.
Oh well, let’s see if I can stack up another one. I can’t commit to 51 weeks in a row (because, well, life … and holidays), but I’m going to push for a 12 week stint now until the end of Quarter 1 2024.
Hopefully you’re off to a good start also?
