Zwift Spring Training: Workout #3 Hairpin Wizard

Unsurprisingly I was a little too tired today to do the typical Tuesday race. Instead I opted for Workout #3 in the Zwift Spring Training series. This was the Hairpin Wizard workout:

This workout consisted of two blocks.

Both were identical, featuring a 30 second ramp – more on that in a second, followed by 3.5 minutes ramping up before repeating, three times.

A lot of threes.

The ramps themselves were:

  • 30 seconds @ 100rpm, from 100 to 120% FTP
  • 3.5 minutes @ 90rpm, from 75 to 88% FTP

The 30 second ramp was the one to watch. Not so much a ramp as a stair step.

15 seconds at 100% FTP, then a hard jump to 15 seconds at 120% FTP.

But honestly, beyond that, this one was not a tough one. It felt very much like a 3 out of 5 in terms of intensity, which just so happened to be the perfect intensity for me today.

One odd thing about this workout was that it took place on the Watopia Waistband route. Being a hill repeats focused workout, it felt odd to do this on the flats. Not that the visuals had any impact on the exercise as such, just an unusual choice of route, in my opinion.

Not much else to add really. Not overly difficult by any means. I’d question how beneficial this session would be in isolation.

Beyond that, it’s a couple of rest days for me now. I’m away with work tomorrow and Thursday, so won’t be on the bike until Friday.

Friday, therefore, should be race day. It looks like an interesting race actually. Three laps (there’s that 3 again) of Volcano Circuit. I’ve never raced there, but as a Crit Circuit, it seems like it’s got all the key parts. Funny how I’ve never considered it in that way before.

No doubt I’ll get smashed.

Until then!
