With two rides under my belt yesterday, this morning’s legs felt a little dicey. I didn’t really want to think about what I was doing, but instead, let Zwift take the reins and I’d just follow along. I assume, a bit like a beginner jockey on a horse.
As such I opted for Jon’s Short Mix around Watopia Volcano Flat. It doesn’t really matter what circuit you choose (afaik) when doing a workout. The effort is re-combobulated into what speed you would be going if doing that effort on that particular piece of road. Or something.
I’ve completed Jon’s Short Mix before. On that occasion my FTP was at 145w. Today my FTP is at 153w. Not a huge difference. The gist of the workout being:
- 2 x 1 minute at 150% of your FTP (229w for me)
- 3 x 10 seconds at 300% of your FTP (459w for me)
- 1 x 10 minutes at 89% of your FTP (136w for me)
This workout has two hard parts. There are five hard efforts at the start, then a bit of a break, and then a longer sustained effort. The first half of the workout goes really quick, but that 10 minute grind doesn’t go quite as fast.
The most frustrating part of the workout was the third and final intense effort. I’d managed to ride hard in the zones for the first two, but on the third, for whatever reason, the ERG mode resistance was insane. This happened to me once before. I’m not even sure what causes this, but I suspect I went too hard, and the resistance adapted to try and kill me.
Anyway, I missed my third intense effort star. Boo. More practice needed on changing tempos under ERG mode, it seems.
After the workout was complete, I was at about 13km for the day. I aim now for 15km, so continued the ride.
Overall I enjoyed this ride. May try and get another ride in shortly (I am writing this several hours later) depending on the tea situation, and the kids.
It would be pretty cool to find a hill segment, then climb the hill, then turn round and do it again. I like the resistance of the hill. There’s a good one on Volcano Circuit, come to think of it. Maybe I will do that. I also need to schedule Stage 3 of the tour.
